The former Minneapolis cop who was convicted of the murder of George Floyd has pleaded not guilty to federal charges related to the use of unreasonable force on a black teen in September 2017.
Derek Chauvin, 45, was sentenced to more than 22 years behind bars for murdering Floyd when he stopped the 46-year-old father from breathing by kneeling on his neck for over nine minutes.
According to Hennepin County prosecutors, Chauvin had used the same force on a handcuffed 14-year-old boy.
The teen was reportedly cuffed during the 17-minute restraint and cried out for his mother, with the arrest leaving him bleeding from his ear.
The Star Tribune reported that Chauvin allegedly held the boy by his throat, hit him in the head many times using a flashlight, and restrained him while the handcuffed teen was lying on the ground.
He was bleeding from his ear and required two stitches.
The former cop is charged with two counts. The first said Chauvin “held the teenager by the throat and struck the teenager multiple times in the head with a flashlight,” and one for the method in which he arrested the boy that violated his civil rights.
The second count said he “held his knee on the neck and the upper back of the teenager even after the teenager was lying prone, handcuffed, and unresisting, also resulting in bodily injury.”
The 2017 incident was only discovered when prosecutors searched through Chauvin’s records to prove that he had a record of using the restraint method before George Floyd’s death.
Prosecutors reportedly found four incidents since 2014 that they said Chauvin went too far, “beyond point when such force was needed under the circumstances.”
