A man who killed his wife before attacking her 12-year-old daughter while she was bleeding to death has been executed.
Now 23, Lindsey Kirk watched the execution of 50-year-old David Neal Cox eleven years after he had shot her mother Kim and attacked her in front of her dying mother.
Cox called himself ‘worthy of death’ before he was covered in a white sheet for the lethal injection in Mississippi State Penitentiary.
In 2012, Cox pleaded guilty after he shot his wife Kim Kirk Cox in 2010. According to reports, he shot the victim in the arm and stomach before forcing 12-year-old Lindsey into the room where he also attacked her.
Before the lethal injection began, Cox said: “I want my children to know that I love them very much and that I was a good man at one time … Don’t ever read anything but the King James Bible.”
He also thanked the state commissioner for “being very kind to me. And that’s all I got to say.”
For his last meal, he requested French fries, fried catfish, hush puppies, coleslaw, and banana pudding.
Lindsey Kirk was only 12 on May 14, 2010, when they heard a gunshot at her aunt’s house where she, her mother, and her two brothers were staying.
“A gunshot came through the screen door, and he ran in and told me not to move,” she recalled. “Mama was laying on the floor. She was bleeding.”
She said that her younger brother “was balled up in a closet.”
State corrections commissioner Burl Cain said: “We met him for about 45 minutes to talk about what would happen, the process we would follow, and what he wanted for his last meal.”
He said Cox expressed “a little bit” of remorse to his victims.
