Cropping dogs’ ears are slowly yet surely becoming a trend and it’s not something to celebrate.
In case you’re not aware, dogs’ ears come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Each has its own distinct appeal, keeping in mind the wide array of breeds available.
Instead of cherishing their little pooch for what they are, some owners are taking a whole new direction. And that revolves around cropping dogs’ ears to make them appear a certain way. Yes, as evil and unbelievable as it may sound, that’s the sad truth.
We definitely wish that it wasn’t this way. However, there are some things in life that we’ve learned to accept and it’s not OK!
Here is a list of reasons why indulging in such acts can lead to awful consequences. So please be aware and share the news with as many dog owners as possible.
The problem that arises when you’re cropping is how it’s like performing mutilation. Why alter a beautiful natural characteristic when you could just embrace it?
Poorly informed citizens go on chopping, not knowing how grave their mistake is. The biggest misconception with the act is how many believe that their pooch may turn prettier or fiercer. In fact, it’s the actual opposite.
Source: One Green PlanetFirstly, you’re not going to rid of any infection by chopping large floppy ears. According to science, ear shape doesn’t have any link with dogs getting an infection. So let’s shun away from that theory immediately.
Did you know that more than 80% of dogs never contract one in the first place. As far as the ones that do, it’s prevalent in breeds like poodles and spaniels whose ears aren’t cropped anyway.
On most occasions, the process takes place when pups are as young as 6 to 12 weeks old. After undergoing the process, the pups need to wear tape with bandages. And that too, for several weeks, ouch!
As far as the surgery is concerned, dogs need to undergo general anesthesia so they don’t feel a thing. Let’s take a moment to add how that itself may lead to complications like swelling or allergies. Did we mention infection too? Sadly, it’s the infection part that’s the motive for cropping in the first place. And here we are exposing them to more threats.
What do experts say
Believe it or not, the famous American Kennel Club actually supports ear cropping. They feel that it not only maintains standards of appearance but also protects some breeds. The latter has to do with the fact that it provides protection from being bitten. Also, they claim that it gives them better hearing qualities.
Meanwhile, other organizations completely oppose the idea. And we’re not talking small names, but big ones in the animal world. For instance, America’s Animal Hospital Association is loud and clear on how it’s so wrong!
They argue that ear cropping creates pain and discomfort for dogs. In the same way, it leaves them with lasting mental trauma for years. Just put yourself in an innocent pup’s shoes. How would you feel? Yes, it’s quite drastic and we can’t even begin to imagine the turmoil it comes with.
Also, let’s not forget how so many dogs use ears to communicate. Therefore, chopping them off lessens their ability to comprehend. It’s a sad world out there. For this reason, raising awareness is so important.
