In Indonesia, a bone-chilling video recording from a funeral shows a corpse that seemed to greet the funeral attendees.
The video was filmed during a Christian burial service in Manado, North Sulawesi, Indonesia on May 5th, by one of the mourners.
The video shows friends and family members gathered around as a priest reads prayers while the person is being buried.
However, as the camera zooms in on the white coffin, which has a clear glass panel on it, there appears to be a hand and fingers moving underneath.
In the video, the priest is heard saying: “God has said in the book of John. I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me he will live even though he is dead.”
Moments later the limb seems to wave or press its hand against the coffin lid. No one noticed the incident at the time, but others pointed it out when the clip was shared on social media.
According to the Indonesian newspaper Serambi Indonesia Daily, the viral video was first shared by Twitter user DMenfess1 on May 9th.
Locals suggested the body was waving or trying to escape from the coffin. However, it’s not known if the person was still alive or if anybody checked.
The footage sparked debate online as to whether the movement was from the corpse.
“Yes, he waved, maybe he was still alive and try to dig his way out,” one user said.
“Maybe it’s a mouse,” another has commented.
The Facebook page iHorror reposted the video to their feed with the caption: “Guests didn’t notice the “wave” until after the burial and they looked at the footage.”
At the time of this writing, the post received over 1,700 shares, 1,400 comments, and 570 likes.
The Instagram account for Linda Ikeji’s Blog (a Nigerian entertainment site) featured the video on their feed receiving more than 50,000 views and 2,500 likes.
While on Twitter, user Zak Bagans, the host of Travel Channel’s “Ghost Adventures” TV series, tweeted the video and it received over 150,000 views, 8,600 likes, and 1,500 retweets.
Despite the ghoulish claims, the corpse was likely to have been moving around due to rigor mortis and the changes in ligaments during decomposition.
A study reported in Medical News Today in September 2019 found that human bodies can move on their own after death.
Researchers from Central Queensland University in Rockhampton, Australia said that it’s a condition, in which the body stiffens during later stages of decomposition and can cause the corpse to move.
Therefore, without any external “assistance” human remains can change their position. This discovery has important implications for forensic science.
Researchers at the Australian Facility for Taphonomic Experimental Research (AFTER) conducted research, where they set up time-lapse cameras to study how dead bodies move.
The cameras filmed the bodies at 30-minute intervals and revealed that the arms were “significantly moving.”
“What we found was that the arms were significantly moving so that arms that started off down beside the body ended up out to the side of the body,” Alyson Wilson, a researcher involved in the project, told ABC News.
The researchers believe that the movement is caused by the build-up of gas in the body in the early to mid-stages of decomposition.
