For those who may not be aware, Alana Smith made shocking history after they represented Team USA as the first-ever openly non-binary olympian to compete at the Tokyo Games. However, it appeared as if the commentators covering the match were far from aware of the pronouns used to represent non-binary individuals.

The 20-year-old athlete represented the country in the skateboarding event for women on Sunday in Tokyo. While everything appeared to be going as planned, the world was appalled when the commentators began their commentary regarding the performance.

Many people just found it so hard to digest how the non-binary athlete was treated with so much disrespect as they were continuously misgendered on numerous occasions.

It appeared as if the mistake was never corrected as it continued to take place the whole time Alana was there. Despite the fact that the USA-based skateboarder had their preferred pronounced mentioned into the skateboard as well as being written via a pin on Alana’s shirt, the mistake just went on throughout the evening.

Both commentators, which included Todd Harris for the NBC Sports Channel and Marc Churchill for the BBC, continued to make the jaw-dropping mistake by misgendering them throughout their entire commentary.

It was clear that the sports commentators lacked research and knowledge on the subject and that’s why there was fury and outrage from all over. In response to the mistake, one trans journalist who is based in the US made it a point to speak their mind on the subject.

They made some scathing comments regarding the issue, adding how this was a prime example of journalistic malpractice. “No one deserves to be misgendered ever, especially when they’re on an international stage like the Olympics,” they added.
