Brian Laundrie has been declared dead after it was confirmed that the human remains found in Carlton Reserve belong to the 23-year-old man.
On Wednesday morning, just one day after the Florida park was reopened to the public, the investigators discovered partial human remains in the alligator-infested swamp. Along with the bones, the authorities, who were joined by Chris and Roberta Laundrie during their search, found Brian’s personal items including his notebook and backpack.
Now, the FBI has confirmed that the remains belong to the wanted fugitive who went missing on September 13, six days before the body of Gabby Petito was discovered.
According to the bureau, the conclusion was made following comparison of dental records.
“On October 2021, a comparison of dental records confirmed that the human remains found at the T Mabry Carlton Jr Memorial Reserve and Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park are those of Brian Laundrie,” the FBI wrote in a statement.
The grim news comes shortly after North Police officers were spotted paying the Laundries a visit at their family home in North Port to presumably inform them about the results of their dental records comparison.
“Chris and Roberta Laundrie have been informed that the remains found yesterday in the reserve are indeed Brian’s,” Steve Bertolino, the family’s attorney, confirmed after the FBI broke the news.
“We have no further comment at this time and we ask that you respect the Laundries’ privacy at this time.”
While it is still unclear when exactly the 23-year-old man, who was the sole person of interest in the strangulation of Gabby Petito, died, the authorities confirmed that the discovered body parts consisted of bones including parts of the skull.
