A 10-year-old boy tragically died while saving his 5-year-old sister after she had fallen into a river in South Dakota.
Ricky Lee Sneve’s body was found by divers on Saturday evening, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook.
His grieving mother, Nicole Eufers, told the Argus Leader that her son was out on the Big Sioux River with his father and siblings when many of the children fell into the water.
Eufers said Ricky did not think twice when he jumped in to rescue his 5-year-old sister, Chevelle. He managed to get her to the shore but when his father and younger siblings looked, he was already missing.
Ricky’s heartbroken father, Chad Sneve, said his son was the type of boy who would do anything for anyone.
“He was generous, kind and special in more ways than I can begin to explain,” he expressed. “He was my everything, and he touched everyone he encountered.”
Ricky was the oldest of Eufers’ four children and had another step-sibling.
“He taught me how to love and appreciate life,” Eufers said. “He never failed to amaze me.”
Ricky’s uncle, Ricky Eufers, described the 10-year-old as loving, intelligent, and adventurous. “Ricky gave his life trying to do what he knew was best,” he wrote in the description of a fundraiser for the boy.
One person commented: “There will be a special place in his families history for this selfless young lad. His poor parents, what mixed emotions and turmoil they must be going through.”
Another wrote: “Aww. That’s just so sad. He was a hero. May he Rest In Peace. Thinking of his family, who will never be the same.”
A third added: “Good man! You took care of your family. If more men were like you, our world would be better. Thank you.”
