A 6-year-old boy who was recorded sobbing ‘no one loves me’ suffered brain damage from a ‘shaking’ injury.
The court, where the murder trial is ongoing, heard that Arthur Labinjo-Hughes was heard crying: “No one loves me.”
According to Birmingham Live, the young boy was found unresponsive at their home in Cranmore Road, Birmingham on June 16, 2020.
Sadly, Arthur passed away the following day at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. A post-mortem examination confirmed that he passed away from a head injury.
His father, 29-year-old Thomas Hughes, and 32-year-old Emma Tustin, were both arrested in connection with the boy’s death.
Both of them have pleaded guilty to murder.
Hughes has denied child cruelty offenses. Tustin has admitted to one count of child cruelty but he also denied other charges of the same offense.
Recordings of Arthur sobbing and calling for his uncle and nanny have been played during the trial at Coventry Crown Court.
Medical expert Professor Stavros Stivaros was called to give evidence and said: “The bleeding I saw in Arthur’s case was in multiple different sites relating to his brain.
“In Arthur’s case the appearance of bleeding is more in keeping with shaking than impact.”
Dr. Roger Malcomson, a consultant pediatric and perinatal pathologist, also gave evidence on some of the injuries Arthur suffered.
Dr. Malcomson spoke about how the boy’s thymus, a small organ that lies in the upper chest and makes white blood cells to protect the body against infections, had shrunk severely.
He said that this could have been the result of sustained and repeated abuse.
The 6-year-old also suffered from considerable bleeding within the eyes which resulted in the detachment of a retina.
The trial is still ongoing.
