A 4-year-old boy was orphaned after he lost his parents and siblings because of an alleged drunk driver who plowed into their car.
Julian Montano was the only one who survived the fatal crash on the busy I-80 in Sierra County, California last Saturday, his grieving uncle wrote in a GoFundMe page.
The other survivor was the suspected drunk driver but the California Highway Patrol said that it was too soon to confirm if the motorist had alcohol in his system.
The boy’s parents, Brittney and Antonio Montano, tragically died in the crash along with his 5-year-old brother Antonio Jr and 9-year-old sister Marianna, said the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office.
According to reports, the family was on their way to the Grand Canyon for a Thanksgiving vacation.
Speaking to the news station KCRA, Anthony Gonzales, the boy’s uncle, said: “Everybody’s suffering from this. This is a giant loss. Four family members at once is too much.”
An official said that the driver of the other vehicle may be under the influence of alcohol.
Sgt. Steve Casetta with CHP’s Gold Run office said after the tragedy: “Alcohol may have been a factor in the wrong-way driver. It’s a little too early to tell but that’s the assumption.”
Little Julian suffered ‘extensive injuries’ but he is expected to make a full recovery. He was airlifted to a hospital in Reno with a broken rib, foot and leg, his uncle wrote.
“We will never be the same after this and our family is trying desperately to stay strong for Julian,” Gonzales said.
“We have to bury four loved ones that were taken from us way too soon, so Julian has a place to visit his mom, dad, and siblings.”
