A 3-year-old boy tragically died after he fell more than 50 feet from a bedroom window while he was playing at his aunt’s apartment.
Daniel Galeas, who was only days away from his 4th birthday, had been jumping on the bed when he fell out of the window.
NYPD officers rushed to the scene and found the unconscious boy at an apartment on West 133rd Street.
Paramedics said that the child had injuries indicating he had fallen from an elevated area.
A witness told Daily Mail that the building’s superintendent asked him to make a 911 call before leading him to the young boy.
“The baby was like, huffing, but he was turning purple… and then he just stopped,” the witness, who has grandkids of his own, recalled. He said that when he realized the child was dead, he broke down in tears.
“I’ve never seen a baby take a last breath,” he expressed. “It’s going to stay with me forever.”
The 3-year-old boy was rushed to NYC Health and Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Daniel’s grandmother, Maria Rivera, told NBC New York that he was in the care of his aunt, 28, while his mother was working in the Bronx.
According to reports, there were many children in the flat, including Daniel’s siblings and cousins, when the tragic incident occurred.
Speaking to ABC 7 NY, the grandmother said she received a call from her daughter, the boy’s aunt, saying she immediately thought something bad had happened to Daniel when she didn’t see him inside the room.
According to reports, the bed was adjacent to a window, which had an air conditioning unit in it. Cardboard panels held the AC in place and one was accidentally pushed by Daniel when he fell.
The grieving family accused the building’s management of failing to properly secure the appliance but the management claimed that tenants installed the unit on their own.
