The authorities found human remains believed to belong to 5-year-old boy Elijah Lewis shortly after his mother was arrested.
Little Elijah was missing for more than one month after his 35-year-old mother, Danielle Dauphinais, and the mom’s 30-year-old boyfriend, Joseph Stapf, failed to report his disappearance.
Now, a cadaver dog reportedly led the police to the remains matching the description of Elijah while a search for the boy was on in Ames Nowell State Park in Abington, Massachusetts.
“This morning state police, cadaver dogs, and emergency response team members located what is presumed to be Elijah Lewis’ body buried in the ground,” Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz revealed.
“I’m not going to get into the specifics of the crime scene or the manner in which this boy’s body was found at this time.”
Though the body has yet to be officially identified, New Hampshire State Police confirmed it matches the 5-year-old’s description.
The search for Elijah began back in October after the Merrimack Department of Children, Youth and Families claimed Dauphinais and Stapf failed to report the disappearance of the 5-year-old.
Following the allegations, the couple was arrested and charged with child endangerment and witness tampering.
According to the prosecutors, Dauphinais and Stapf not only failed to report the fact that Elijah was missing but also lied to other people about the boy’s whereabouts.
As of this writing, nobody has yet been charged in connection to the boy’s death and the investigation remains ongoing.
“This is the beginning of the investigation at this point. We need to go where the facts take us,” Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz added.
