President Joe Biden said the Texas law that bans abortion once a fetal heartbeat is detected is almost un-American.
Speaking at the White House, he took a question on the abortion topic as he prepared to visit Louisiana to see damages left by the hurricane.
“The most pernicious thing about the Texas law, it sort of creates a vigilante system where people get rewards to go out and – anyway. And it just seems – I know this sounds ridiculous – almost unamerican what we’re talking about,” he said.
The President said that he doesn’t agree but respects the views of people who believe life begins at conception.
“It just seems, I know this sounds ridiculous, almost un-American what we’re talking about,” he told reporters.
“Not to debate about, I respect people who think, who don’t support Roe v. Wade. I respect their views.”
“I respect those who believe life begins at the moment of conception and all. I respect that, don’t agree, but I respect that. Not going to impose that on people,” he continued.
The Texas law is one of the strictest abortion laws in the country. It prohibits abortion providers from performing procedures once a fetal heartbeat is detected, which is around 6 weeks into the pregnancy.
This law also lets private individuals sue providers or anyone who assisted a woman in getting an abortion and win $10,000 or more in damages.
The White House previously said that the Justice Department and other agencies are thinking of actions to counter the law.
“There are possibilities within the existing law to have the Justice Department look and see whether there are things that can be done that can limit the independent action of individuals in enforcing in a federal system a state law,” Biden said.
