A baby girl tragically passed away in pain after her own mother had stomped on her and failed to call for help for 15 long minutes.
16-month-old Star Hobson died in agonizing pain after her mother, 20-year-old Frankie Smith, and the mother’s lover, 28-year-old Savannah Brockhill, had stomped all over her and caused “utterly catastrophic” injuries.
Following the unforgiving act, Smith reportedly waited for as long as 15 minutes before calling for help. By the time the paramedics arrived at the scene, the little girl already suffered major blood loss and organ failure.
As Bradford Crown Court in Keighley, England, heard, Star suffered lung bruising, split liver, and a major vein rupture during her ordeal, whereas the prosecutors insisted that the injuries had to be a result of “punching, stamping or kicking to the abdomen.”
“The reality is that the injuries suffered by Star were so catastrophic that there never was any real chance of saving her life,” Prosecutor Alistair MacDonald QC said.
He added: “It is inconceivable that any carer would wait 15 minutes to call for professional help when their 16-month-old child was showing symptoms of a medical catastrophe. Any innocent carer would have been on the phone within seconds, not 15 minutes.”
Despite the evidence pointing against them, both Smith and Brockhill denied all allegations and insisted that two young children who were with them at their home at the time of the incident were responsible for Star’s injuries.
“It will be the prosecution case that is nothing short of absurd to suggest that these injuries were caused by another young child,” the prosecutor insisted.
“As you will hear, the pathologist will say, the degree of force applied was so great to cause the injuries that it is quite impossible for the doctors to envisage that it could have been inflicted by a child.”
The court also saw proof of previous “cruelty and psychological harm” done to the 16-month-old thanks to a clip in which the child’s mother is seen roughly handing her daughter.
Meanwhile, the jury was told of the moment the mother’s lover picked the toddler up by her neck and threw her on the bed.
“You may wonder what that little girl did to deserve that sort of treatment,” MacDonald added.
“You would not be human if you did not, in those circumstances, feel strong and powerful emotions.”
Smith and Brockhill have denied murder charges and currently stand trial over the death of 16-month-old Star Hobson.
