A 1-year-old baby girl tragically died after she was left in the back of a hot car for almost ten hours.
According to Houston police, the mother took her three children – ages 1, 3, and 5 – to daycare around 8:30 am but dropped off only two of them.
She then drove back home, switched vehicles, and worked out before returning to the daycare to pick up her kids.
But when she returned to the daycare, she was told that they only had records of the 3-year-old and 5-year-old that day.
The mother then returned to her home in the Crescent Park Village subdivision with a daycare staff member to search for the child.
Police said that they later discovered the 1-year-old girl on the back floorboard of the mother’s car.
According to reports, the baby was apparently left in the vehicle from 8:30 am to 6 pm.
Temperatures in Houston reached over 90 degrees that day but police said that the car’s interior could have reached over 120 degrees.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzales said that the officers struggled to gather the mother’s statement as she was ‘obviously extremely upset.’
Police said that the children’s mother has not been cooperative.
The child’s death appears to be accidental but the case will be presented to the District Attorney’s Office to determine whether any charges will be filed.
The incident marks the 20th child hot car death this year.
One person commented: “These forgotten babies by parents is ridiculous. They won’t forget their damn phone but not their children. Charge her.”
Another wrote: “I’m sorry but I’ll never believe you ‘forget’ you have a child, or haven’t seen your child, for ten hours. How do you not know where your children are???”
