A newborn baby was ripped apart by a dog while sleeping at his family’s home in North Carolina.
The tragic incident took place in Johnston County where an 8-day-old baby was attacked and killed by a pit bull that has been condemned to euthanization following the attack.
As of this writing, it remains unclear who the dog belongs to and whether anyone, including the baby’s parents, will be held responsible for the newborn’s death.
Unclear are also the circumstances of the attack that took place inside the N. Church Street home on Wednesday at 5 in the morning.
“First and foremost, we offer our sincere condolences to the family and their friends during this difficult time,” Police Chief Josh Gibson said in a statement, Johnston County Report revealed.
While the residents of the home where the attack took place refused to comment on the matter, one neighbor spoke to WRAL to share his opinion about the deadly attack.
“It is pretty painful to a young baby, the baby had no defense for itself,” Michael Street said.
According to previous reports, this isn’t the first dog attack resulting in the death of a child in the state this year.
Previously, in May and September, two children from Johnston County were killed by Rottweilers and pit bulls.
In September, Jayden Henderson, a 7-year-old girl from Garner, was fatally attacked by two pit bulls whose owner was the family’s neighbor.
Earlier in May, Malia Scott Winberry, a 10-month-old baby girl, was ripped apart by her family’s two Rottweilers after she was left unsupervised for a matter of seconds.
