A 6-year-old boy tragically died after he was attacked by a pack of dogs while he was playing near the animals’ enclosure.
According to reports, Avery Jackson Dunphy from Las Cruces, New Mexico, was mauled by the dogs his grandparents fostered when his grandfather left him unattended for “no more than ten minutes.”
The police report said that Avery wandered into the caged area and he was attacked, leaving him with severe wounds including cuts to his chest and neck.
Avery’s grandfather called 911 and can be heard saying: “Those dogs are back here with him, so I’m thinking a dog attacked him.”
The 6-year-old was airlifted to a hospital in El Paso, Texas where he sadly passed away.
It is not clear how he managed to get into the caged area containing a pack of dogs or what happened before the incident.
The six dogs were euthanized but it is not clear how many were involved in the attack, KVIA.com reported.
The heartbroken community, including the Las Cruces Fire Department, gathered at Real Life Church and celebrated Avery’s life.
Speaking to TV station KFOX14, Avery’s grieving father said that his son had dreamed of becoming a fireman.
A family member also said that Avery would have ‘wanted everyone there,’ adding that his ‘life needs to be celebrated and not to have died in vain.’
Stewart said that preliminary information suggests that the tragic incident was an accident but an investigation is underway.
One person commented: “Ten minutes is a lifetime if the child was in danger. How was a six year old able to access a pen where these huge dogs were caged?”
Another wrote: “He was a six year old curious kid, loves dogs no doubt.”
A third added: “RIP little Avery.”
