67-year-old Gregory McMichael, 35-year-old Travis McMichael, and 52-year-old William Bryan are facing a minimum sentence of life in prison after being found guilty of murdering the 25-year-old Black man when he was jogging through a neighborhood near Glynn County in Georgia last year.
Following the verdict, Ahmaud’s family has spoken out and called for unity in the politically divided nation.
While mother Wanda Cooper-Jones thanked the family’s supporters and called the verdict justice, Ahmaud’s father, Marcus Arbery, insisted that all lives matter and that nobody should go through what his family went through.
“Ya’ll pulled together and worked this thing. That’s what it’s all about. We conquered that lynch mob,” Marcus said as he addressed the crowd outside the court following the verdict.
“For real all lives matter, not just blacks. We don’t want to see nobody go through this. I don’t want to see no daddy watch their kid get shot down like that day.
“It’s all our problem. Let’s keep fighting. Let’s keep doing it and making this place a better place for all human beings. Love everybody. All human beings need to be treated equally. Today is a good day.”
Meanwhile, Ahmaud’s aunt, Yvon Arbery, spoke to DailyMail.com as she called for change and healing.
“It’s just so much joy. I feel so much satisfaction, thank you God. This is going to bring big change to Brunswick, Georgia and the rest of the country. It will show everybody know that you cannot have this hatred in your heart and you cannot get away with this anymore,” she told the publication.
