The family of Ahmaud Arbery has spoken out after the three men who killed the young Black jogger were found guilty of murder.
On Wednesday, 67-year-old Gregory McMichael, 35-year-old Travis McMichael, and 52-year-old William Bryan were found guilty of murder more than a year after they surrounded Arbery and shot him dead after falsely accusing him of robbery.
Following the long-awaited verdict, the young man’s family spoke out and thanked their supporters for standing by their side for more than a year.
“I just wanna say thank you guys. Thank you. Thank each and everyone of you,” Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, told the crowd outside the court.
“To tell you the truth, I never thought this day – back in 2020 – I never thought this day would come, but God is good. Now Quez, which you know him as Ahmaud, he will now rest in peace.”
Later on, the mother also spoke to the media as she revealed that today was a huge moment for the entire family.
“To hear that the accused murderers were actually found guilty, I mean, that was huge. We finally got the justice for Ahmaud that he deserved back in 2020,” she said after the verdict was announced.
Speaking out on the family’s behalf was also attorney Ben Crump who said the family can now finally rest assured that the killers will be locked behind bars for good.
“Nothing will bring back Ahmaud, but his family will have some peace knowing the men who killed him will remain behind bars and can never inflict their brand of evil on another innocent soul,” the lawyer expressed.
