The Taliban previously took over Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001 before they were overthrown by a US-led campaign.

Under their rule, women could only appear in public wearing full-body coverings and accompanied by male escorts, and girls were not allowed to go to school.

Those who did not follow the strict interpretation of Islamic law were executed or publicly flogged.

United Nations’ Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a statement that “Afghanistan is spinning out of control” and the conflict is “taking an even bigger toll on women and children.”

Guterres also said that he’s “deeply disturbed by early indications that the Taliban are imposing severe restrictions on human rights in the areas under their control, particularly targeting women and journalists.

“It is particularly horrifying and heartbreaking to see reports of the hard-won rights of Afghan girls and women being ripped away from them.”

Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner, also shared her concerns.

She took to Twitter and wrote: “We watch in complete shock as Taliban takes control of Afghanistan. I am deeply worried about women, minorities and human rights advocates.

“Global, regional and local powers must call for an immediate ceasefire, provide urgent humanitarian aid and protect refugees and civilians.”

Malala became a symbol for human rights advocates when she survived being shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in 2012.
