Major League Soccer player Anton Walkes has passed away from serious injuries he suffered in a boating accident.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said that around 3 pm on Wednesday, officers rushed to a two-vessel accident near the Miami Marine Stadium basin.
The athlete received CPR while being taken to the shore.
“Mr. Walkes was taken to an area hospital where he later died from his injuries. Our thoughts are with the family, friends and fans of Mr. Walkes during this difficult time,” the statement added.
Charlotte FC also confirmed the ‘tragic and heartbreaking’ death.
“Charlotte Football Club can confirm the tragic and heartbreaking news that defender Anton Walkes passed away early Thursday morning following an accident in South Florida,” the Charlotte FC said in a statement.
Charlotte FC owner David Tepper described the 25-year-old as a “tremendous son, father, partner and teammate whose joyous approach to life touched everyone he met.
“Anton made those around him better people in all areas of life and represented Charlotte FC to the highest standard both on and off the pitch,” he continued.
“He will be greatly missed by many and our thoughts and prayers are with Anton’s family during this heartbreaking time. The Club offers its full support to all those impacted during this period of mourning.”
It was in 2017 when Walkes moved to the US and joined Atlanta on loan.
In 2020, Walkes joined the club permanently after another spell at Portsmouth.
He then joined Charlotte FC for the 2022 MLS season.
According to TMZ, Walkes had been on a boat near the Miami Marine Stadium on January 18 when t crashed into another vessel. The young star was found unconscious and received CPR from Miami Fire Rescue while being taken to a hospital where he died from his injuries.
