Kevin Spacey accepted a Lifetime Achievement Award with a smile on his face despite his looming s*xual assault trial.
During the grand awards ceremony at the Italian National Cinema Museum in Turin, Italy, the 63-year-old actor accepted the Stella della Mole and thanked the organizers for inviting him despite the allegations he is facing.
While a New York jury previously concluded that Spacey did not s*xually molest actor Anthony Rapp when the latter was a teenager, Spacey is set to undergo a separate trial in London this June.
Accepting the prestigious award, he said: “The first performance that I ever gave was in my junior high school drama class. It was a little five-minute scene that we had to create, with no words.
“But we could have music. I was 11 years old. And I decided to do a Western scene, so that I could play a cowboy. Well, a bank robber. The bad guy, naturally.”
He continued: “I have been so honored to have been part of the creative process with so many remarkable people. Filmmakers, artists and technicians I have had the chance to work with.
“Who would not consider tonight the perfect opportunity to say, ‘Thank you!’ You are not just honoring me. You are honoring all of them.”
Spacey concluded his speech by saying he felt “grateful” and “humbled” to be standing in the country’s National Museum of Cinema as he thanked the organizers for having ‘le palle’ – ‘a pair’ [of balls].
Spacey also thanked his “remarkable” manager Evan Lowenstein for always standing by his side and staying loyal to him despite the setbacks they’ve encountered.
