Russia bombed a village in Poland and killed at least two civilians in the process.
On Wednesday, NATO vowed to defend every inch of its territory in Europe after a Russian missile hit the village of Przewodow in Poland – a NATO member.
NATO officials have since called for an emergency meeting to discuss retaliation measures against Moscow and prepare for a response to Russia’s bombing of the sovereign nation.
According to the reports, at least two people were killed in the missile strike. It remains unclear whether the missile went stray or if it was aimed at the small village that lies just miles away from the border with Ukraine.
“A Russian-made missile fell, killing two citizens of the Republic of Poland,” Lukasz Jasina of the Polish foreign ministry confirmed. The spokesperson added that the Russian ambassador to Poland has been summoned to provide “immediate detailed explanations.”
Meanwhile, footage from the site of the strike confirms the devastation left behind by the missile.
According to NATO’s defense policies, an attack on one member means an attack on all, whereas Poland could summon the rest of the military alliance in response to the bombing.
A full-on military response from NATO, however, is very unlikely unless it is proved that Russia intended to target Polish infrastructure, civilian structures, or military bases.
“We’ve been crystal clear that we will defend every inch of NATO territory,” Pentagon spokesman Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder.
According to some speculations, it is possible that the Russian missile struck the Polish village after being shot down by Ukraine’s defense system. These rumors, however, have not yet been confirmed.
“A collective response to Russian actions must be tough and principled. Among immediate actions: a NATO summit with Ukraine’s participation to craft further joint actions, which will force Russia to change its course on escalation, providing Ukraine with modern aircraft,” Ukraine’s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba said.
