A young baby was shot dead in front of his horrified parents during a stroll in the San Joaquin Valley, California.
The incident took place on Wednesday midday when the parents of 9-month-old Darius King Grigsby took the baby boy for a stroll in Merced.
While the family was walking down the street, a car pulled up and multiple bullets were fired at the trio from within the vehicle.
According to the police, at least one of the bullets struck baby Darius while he was sitting in his stroller.
Merced Police Department officials have since spoken out and revealed that the motive for the shooting is still unknown.
While this has yet to be confirmed, the police also suggested that the shooters’ target may have been one or both of the parents and that it is possible the baby was caught in the crossfire.
“We don’t know what the motive is. At this point it’s possible that maybe one of the parents was a possible target and the child was just tragically caught in the crossfire,” Lieutenant Joe Perez said.
Unfortunately, the infant was pronounced dead at the scene after the paramedics arrived.
“My son deserves justice and so do his dad and I,” the baby boy’s grieving mom said in an interview with ABC30.
Speaking out was also the child’s aunt, Andrea Bolanos, who said Darius was a cheerful baby who was always smiling and laughing.
“Always a cheerful baby. Always smiling and laughing. He didn’t deserve to go like this, especially this soon. He was just starting to enjoy food and being mobile,” she said.
As of this writing, the investigation remains ongoing and the police have yet to name any suspects.
Our thoughts are with Darius’ family during this tragic time.
