A school shooting in Missouri has rocked the nation and left one student and one teacher dead.
On Monday at around 9 am, a 19-year-old gunman described as a Black man entered the Central Visual and Performing Arts High School in St. Louis while managing to avoid several armed guards.
While it remains unclear how exactly the armed suspect got inside the building, the guards have since insisted that all of the doors were locked.
Once inside the school, the 20-year-old declared: “You’re all going to die.”
He then opened fire and critically wounded 61-year-old health teacher Jean Kirk Kuczka and a 15-year-old female student named Alex.
After committing the double murder, the suspect was shot dead by the police.
It has since been revealed that seven guards were watching over the school at the time of the shooting. St Louis Police Commissioner Michael Slack, however, refused to provide details about the shooter’s entry saying he didn’t want to provide other potential school shooters with a “blueprint.”
“The gun laws in St Louis are very broad. If someone walks down the street with a rifle, if we have no cause we can’t go and talk to them. And that’s one of the greatest challenges we face,” Slack says.
According to the reports, the guards at the school admitted seeing the shooter attempting to enter the building through a locked door.
Instead of engaging the young man, they informed school officials about their sighting, and the police were called to the school.
Sadly, Alex and Jean were killed by the gunman by the time the police arrived at the school and engaged the 20-year-old.
At least seven other people were injured in the shooting. Their condition remains unclear.
