A Georgia pastor’s wife tragically died after being hit by a bullet in the head while they were asleep.
Lashunda Heath-Ellison passed away one week after a stray bullet from a nearby shooting entered their home in Decatur neighborhood and went through the headboard of their bed and struck her in the head.
Her husband, Pastor Mac Ellison, woke up to the sound of what he initially thought was his wife’s snoring.
Heath-Ellison was a mother to a son, Dejuan, and two daughters, Taylor and Jatisha.
She had just celebrated her 50th birthday when the incident happened.
DeKalb County Police Department confirmed that a person was shot at around 12:43 am on October 5.
According to reports, Ellison woke up and heard his wife breathing heavily. But she remained unresponsive even after the pastor tried to shake her.
Ellison initially thought that his wife was just snoring. But he felt something wasn’t right and he turned on the lights.
With the help of their children, the pastor rolled his wife over and discovered ‘blood everywhere.’
“I just woke up to very heavy breathing,” he said, WSB-TV reported. “And we saw blood everywhere.”
Health-Ellison was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital where an X-ray revealed that she had bullet shrapnel near her brain.
Upon returning home from hospital, Ellison and the children saw the hole that went through the bedroom.
“It went through the headboard and right into the top of my wife’s head and stopped here in her sinus,” the pastor said.
Days after the incident, Ellison announced on Facebook that his wife had died.
“My wife Lashunda Heath-Ellison gained her wings,” he wrote. “Please give us a moment to process this. My Perfect Angel is gone but forever in our hearts.”
No arrests have been made in connection to the fatal shooting.
