Sean Penn’s mother, Eileen Ryan, has passed away at her Malibu home at the age of 94, her representative confirmed.
The actress, who was married to director and actor Leo Penn from 1957 until he died in 1998, appeared in more than 60 movies and television shows over her decades-long career.
She was a mother to musician Michael Penn, 64, actor Sean, 62, and late actor Chris Penn, who passed away at the age of 40.
The legendary star’s first television appearance was on the series Goodyear Television Playhouse.
She first made her debut on Broadway at the age of 25 in 1953’s Sing Till Tomorrow before acting in Comes a Day in 1958.
The actress appeared on TV shows and was often directed by her husband on many shows including Little House on the Prairie, Cannon, and Bonanza.
Ryan, who died only days before her 95th birthday on October 16, attended red carpet events with her son and his pals.
She and Sean worked together on I Am Sam, The Indian Runner, and All the King’s Men, among others.
In 1986, she played her sons Chris’ and Sean’s on-screen grandmother in At Close Range.
It was in 2016 when she last appeared in Warren Beatty’s romantic dramedy Rules Don’t Apply in 2016.
Sean said of his mother in his 2006 New Yorker profile: “She was a lioness. Boy, she could dress down those authority figures. She was unintimidatable.”
Ryan once said, as per the New Yorker, “all the passion I had for acting went into being a mother” and that she and her husband Leo “had a great marriage.”
“We were never bored with each other,” she said. “We grew together.”
