A 43-year-old father has told of his heartache after his newborn son tragically died after multiple blunders by doctors.
Darren Smith shared how his son Isaac, who died only six days after being born, suffered brain damage while being starved of oxygen during birth at a hospital in London.
The baby was rushed to St. Thomas’s Hospital but his life support was switched off less than a week later after doctors concluded that he wouldn’t be able to survive.
An inquiry into the case identified over 30 errors during the birth at the hospital.
Mr. Smith said that his son would’ve survived with no brain damage if only the correct procedures were followed.
The grieving father said he and his wife went to an unnamed hospital for their final scan when she was almost 37 weeks pregnant.
But before leaving, his wife suddenly felt a ‘gush’ she initially thought was her water breaking. It turned out that it was a placental eruption.
Placental eruption, which affects up to one percent of pregnancies, happens when the placenta – the organ that passes nutrients and oxygen to the fetus – separates from the inner wall of the uterus before birth.
This deprives the baby of nutrients and oxygen.
The couple were still inside the hospital at that time but they were told by doctors to “just monitor the situation” for a couple of hours even though Mrs. Smith was already bleeding ‘a lot.’
She then underwent an emergency c-section and Isaac was resuscitated but he had already suffered brain damage because of oxygen deprivation.
Isaac was rushed to St. Thomas where he underwent brain cooling to stop further brain damage but he died six days later when his life support was turned off.
An external inquiry found over 30 errors during Issac’s birth and concluded that he would’ve survived without any brain damage if the proper procedures had been followed after doctors discovered the placenta abruption.
Ten years after the heartbreaking incident, Mr. Smith is now set to run the Royal Parks Half Marathon in his son’s memory to raise £50,000 ($55,000) for St. Thomas’s.
He shared how the team “supported the entire family for over seven years along the toughest journey imaginable,” and helped deliver his daughter.
