At least six people were shot and wounded – two of them critically – near a cluster of schools in East Oakland, California.
The mass shooting took place at a Fontaine Street building which lies in proximity to several schools including Rudsdale Newcomer High School, Bay Area Technology School, and Sojourner Truth Independent Study.
According to the reports, at least six people were injured in the shooting. Three of them were rushed to Highland Hospital while another three were taken to Castro Valley’s Eden Medical Center.
Two of the victims remain in critical condition as of this writing.
The police have since launched a manhunt for the suspect, but it remains unclear whether one or more people were responsible for the shooting.
Meanwhile, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf confirmed that all of the victims were adults, though at least two of them were just 18 and 19 years old respectively.
“Today’s gun violence at Sojourner Truth school shocks the soul — our schools are sanctuaries for our children. Our investigators report all six victims are adults + being treated for injuries at hospitals now. The school is now clear + all children being reunited w/ families,” Schaaf tweeted.
The police also confirmed that the situation is no longer active and that the suspect is no longer located in the area of the school cluster.
Confirming the incident was also the Oakland Unified School District who released the following statement:
“There was an incident today at the King Estate campus on Fontaine Street, which houses the co-located Rudsdale Continuation and Newcomer high schools, BayTech Charter School, and the headquarters of Sojourner Truth Independent Study, which has no students at the site.
“The campus is near Oakland Academy of Knowledge (OAK), but it is important to note the incident was NOT at OAK, nor did it have anything to do with that elementary school.
“We currently do not have any information beyond what Oakland Police are reporting.”
