Dozens of children were rushed to the hospital after a horrific accident involving a truck and a school bus.
The collision took place in Bacchus Marsh, northwest of Australia’s Melbourne, where a school bus carrying 27 Loreto College Ballarat students got struck by a truck.
According to the reports, all of the students were females aged between 9 and 11.
It is believed that a total of 33 people were on the bus when the accident happened.
As per the preliminary investigation, the school trip came to an abrupt and terrifying end after the bus was hit by a truck, causing it to fall off the road and roll down a hill.
The condition of the students currently remains unclear.
Investigators also revealed that the collision took place while emergency responders were clearing the road following a prior crash on the highway.
While the school bus in question came to a slow according to speed reduction signs set up after the first accident, the truck – which was filled with sand – reportedly failed to stop while going downhill toward the scene of the first accident.
“(VicRoads) had speed reduction signs out, they had people working on the side of the road in relation to the road barriers that were destroyed from the previous collision,” Victoria Police Detective Inspector Roger Schranz revealed.
“The bus has slowed down as per the signs and then the truck has come around the corner and headed down towards the hill.
“It’s seen the speed reduction and the banked up traffic and collided with the bus, forcing it off the left hand side of the freeway down the cliff.”
As of this writing, the driver of the truck reportedly failed to tell the police how the accident occurred. It was also revealed that he failed to help the victims of the crash when other witnesses rushed to their aid.
Schranz has since added that the police will be looking at all possible options including the potential involvement of drugs, fatigue, alcohol, and an overweight vehicle to determine the cause of the collision.
Though the scene was described as “chaotic,” there were miraculously no casualties, the inspector said.
“It was horrific for (the children), but just as horrific for their parents,” he added.
“I would have assumed someone would have passed away out of this entire tragedy so they’re all very fortunate people.”
Our thoughts remain with the victims of the crash.
