A loving mother and her 14-month-old baby were both found dead in their apartment only days after missing their holiday plans.
Natalie Kane and her son Harry were found lifeless in their Whitehaven apartment in Cumbria five days after they failed to arrive at their friend’s house to celebrate Christmas.
On Tuesday, an inquest heard that the child died from dehydration after he was left alone when his mother passed away from substance abuse.
According to LancsLive, Natalie had her prescribed methadone in her urine when it was checked just a week before her tragic death.
She lived with depression and was receiving support from services including Women Out West and Recovery Steps Cumbria after abuse and drug addiction.
People who knew her described her as a devoted and loving mother whose life revolved around her son.
Natalie’s brother Scott recalled the moment she announced her pregnancy and how she ‘grew up a lot’ since then.
Before her death, Natalie met with her friends and spent some time with her brother who had brought a balanced bicycle for Harry.
The excited mother also bought many presents for her son.
On Christmas Day, she had planned to visit a friend, Stacey Hackett, with Harry but failed to show up.
Stacey said that she wasn’t concerned when the mother and son did not arrive as she thought that they had decided to spend the day with their family.
Concern was then raised five days later when Natalie failed to pick up a prescription.
A police officer attended and spoke to neighbors who said they did not see her for many days. One neighbor recalled hearing a tap running constantly but no other sounds.
When the officer finally got permission to enter the apartment, he found Natalie unresponsive in the living room. Her son’s body was discovered in the bathroom.
It is believed that Harry survived for two to three days after his mother’s death before he died from dehydration.
