As many as sixty people are feared dead after a massive explosion at a mosque in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Wednesday.
During evening prayers, a huge blast took place at a mosque in the capital’s 17th district and killed several dozen people.
While the exact death toll remains unclear, sources suggest that at least 20 and up to 60 people might have been killed in the blast. At least 27, including several young children, were also injured in the explosion.
Following the presumed terror attack, Taliban forces were spotted patrolling the area with investigators examining the site of the blast.
Reports from the area further reveal that the “powerful” explosion caused the windows of nearby buildings to shatter.
“A blast happened inside a mosque… the blast has casualties, but the numbers are not clear yet,” Khalid Zadran of the Kabul police told Reuters.
The Taliban officials have yet to officially comment on the attack.
The explosion comes just days after a suicide bomber detonated a grenade at Kabul International Cricket Stadium and killed as many as 19 people in the process.
“I strongly condemn Friday’s attack at the Kabul International Cricket Stadium, which claimed the lives of at least 19 civilians & caused additional casualties,” UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said as he condemned the attack.
“Attacks against civilians and civilian objects are strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law.”
The Taliban, who initially denied there were casualties, also revealed that the cricket match resumed after a clean-up.
“The match stopped for a while. After clean-up of the area the match restarted,” Zadran told Reuters.
