At least two people died and an additional sixty or more were injured after a series of massive explosions at a fireworks storage inside a mall.
The shocking incident took place in Yerevan, Armenia, where plumes of black smoke were seen taking over the sky on Sunday morning after a local fireworks warehouse caught fire.
According to the reports, the building was completely destroyed and, in some parts, razed to the ground in the blast as the fire spread through the halls of the market.
While the cause of the explosion remains unclear, authorities have confirmed that several dozen people were injured besides the two fatalities.
In footage from the scene, terrified residents could be seen running away from the Surmalu market as the walls of the building collapsed.
Following the explosion, rescuers and firefighters rushed to the scene to put out the blaze and look for survivors.
The first responders were also aided by civilians who managed to get out of the range of the explosion in time to get away unscathed.
While the exact death toll remains unclear, Armenia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations confirmed that at least twenty people called the emergency department after they failed to get in contact with their loved ones who were in the mall at the time of the incident.
The country’s health ministry further confirmed that 11 of the 60 injured people were children and that a total of 22 individuals were already treated for their injuries and discharged from the hospital.
The authority further confirmed that two people died in the blast. The death toll, however, is expected to rise as the rescue mission continues.
