A young man was left fighting for his life after getting struck in the head in an unprovoked subway attack.
29-year-old Jay Reist is a Columbia University graduate student who suffered severe brain trauma after getting hit in the back of his head while walking in the New York City subway.
Following the random, unprovoked attack, the young man exited the subway at 15th street and 8th Avenue and called for an Uber.
He was later rushed to the New York Presbyterian Hospital where he remains hooked to life support and is fighting for his life after he started suffering from seizures while sharing the ride with another passenger.
According to the reports, it is still unclear what the motive for the attack was or why the young man was targeted. The suspect remains at large as of this moment.
Following the attack, Jay’s mom spoke out and admitted feeling angry and upset by what had happened to her family out of the blue.
“I think that Jay was at the wrong place at the wrong time,” Louise Reist said in an interview with NBC 4.
The mom also recalled worrying after her son failed to come home and stopped answering her texts. Eventually, her calls were answered only for a nurse to inform her that her son was in the hospital after being attacked on the subway.
“He’s just lying in bed needing machines to help him live,” Louise added.
“I am not at all hating humanity, I have more gratitude now than I’ve had in a long time because of the way people are taking care of us. There is just an angry person out there.”
While the police continue looking for the suspect, a fundraiser has been launched to help Reist’s family raise enough money to pay for his medical bills.
