Two people died and three were injured in shootings at four different 7-Eleven stores in California.
On Monday, 7/11, armed robberies took place at four different 7-Eleven locations in Southern California as the chain was celebrating its 95th birthday by handing out free Slurpee drinks.
According to the police, two people were killed and three were wounded in four separate incidents in Riverside, Brea, La Habra, and Santa Ana.
The authorities also confirmed that at least three of the robberies were committed by the same gunman who worked alone.
It was not immediately clear why the suspect targeted 7-Eleven locations and why he did so on July 11.
“Our hearts are with the victims and their loved ones. We are gathering information on this terrible tragedy and working with local law enforcement,” the convenience store chain confirmed after the shocking shootings.
Meanwhile, a Riverside Police Department spokesperson suggested it can’t be a coincidence that the gunman targeted four 7-Eleven stores on July 11.
“I think the only person to answer that would be the suspect. There’s no way it can be a coincidence of it being 7-Eleven, July 11,” Officer Ryan Railsback said after being asked about the circumstances of the connected shootings.
He added that the robberies appeared unusual because criminals normally don’t target low-yield convenience stores, especially not several in a row belonging to the same franchise.
“If you go hit a liquor store or a 7-Eleven or a fast food place, you’re not going to get a lot of cash out of it. It’s kind of odd that they would do this,” Railsback said.
Speaking of the robbery case in Riverside, where one customer was shot dead, the police said there appears to be no reason for the gunman to shoot the customer after already being handed the money by the clerk.
“It doesn’t appear to be any reason that the suspect shot the customer. It sounds like the clerk gave him whatever he asked for,” the spokesperson continued.
Meanwhile, Maria Lopez of the Santa Ana Police Department explained how the suspect approached a local 7-Eleven at around 3.20 am, an hour and a half after the shooting in Riverside.
When the police arrived at the scene, they found a dead man in the parking lot.
“At this moment, we don’t believe he was an employee. We don’t really know yet what he was doing there in a parking lot, if he was a potential customer or just walking by,” Lopez said.
Following the shootings in Riverside and Santa Ana, similar incidents occurred in Brea, at around 4.18 am, and La Habra, at 4.55 am.
“We feel confident that it is the same suspect,” Brea Police Capt. Phil Rodriguez said.
