A one-year-old boy plunged to his death after falling from the window of a 7th-floor apartment in England.
The tragic incident took place at a council apartment building in Saville Green, Leeds, where a young mom was living together with her baby son.
According to the reports, the 1-year-old plunged 60 feet to his death after falling through a 7th-floor apartment window with a faulty latch.
West Yorkshire Police revealed that the boy landed on a patch of grass and died shortly after being rushed to the hospital.
Following the tragedy, the mother’s friend, 32-year-old Yohana Tesfagaber, spoke out and claimed her friend was a very good mother.
She also insisted that the mom called the Leeds City Council on two occasions to ask them to fix the faulty latch in her council housing flat.
“She’s very nice, she’s a good mum. I’ve just come back from her, she’s not good. She was sick yesterday, she’s been vomiting. She can’t keep any food down,” Tesfagaber revealed.
“She’s called housing twice to ask them to fix the latch on the window.”
The friend continued: “It’s very sad. I saw him in hospital, it’s hit me very hard. His mum can’t eat, she can’t sleep.”
Meanwhile, neighbors of the young mother recalled the woman as a “devoted” parent who was left “screaming in horror” after the horrific incident.
“She’s a good mother, and a very nice person. I don’t know exactly what happened, but I heard her screaming and I followed her down the stairs,” one neighbor said.
“He was such a happy, fast baby. He was walking everywhere. If he saw you, he would run up to you and give you a hug. I’m very sad, she’s a very nice person.”
Another resident of the council building also suggested that windows have safety locks that prevent them from being open fully. The latches, however, are reportedly broken in the mother’s apartment.
“She’s a very nice lady, I’ve known her quite a while. I’ve done some decorating for her and she’s given me food before when I had nothing in,” a cleaner who did some work for the mom said.
“The windows have two latches on them, but they’re faulty. You put a tiny bit of pressure on them and they come off.”
Leeds City Council has yet to comment on the incident and the reports of faulty window latches.
