A mayor has hit the headlines after marrying an alligator dressed in a white wedding gown.
Victor Hugo Sosa, the mayor of San Pedro Huamelula, a small town in south-western Mexico, has made the news after wedding a 7-year-old alligator named Little Princess as part of a centuries-old ritual.
According to the reports, the indigenous ritual that took place in the small Mexican town is bound to bring abundance and good luck while protecting the town from natural disasters.
In a big ceremony attended by hundreds of locals, Little Princess, who represents Mother Nature, is seen wearing a white wedding dress while being carried in the mayor’s arms.
For everyone’s safety, however, Princess had her snout tied shut.
After tying the knot, the festivities took place and Victor and Princess were seen dancing to traditional music before sharing a PDA moment when the Mexican mayor kissed the alligator on its snout.
“It gives me so much happiness and makes me proud of my roots. It’s a very beautiful tradition,” Elia Edith Aguilar, the organizer of the ceremony, said after the event.
The ‘godmother’ went on to say she feels privileged to be able to oversee the event before admitting it wasn’t easy deciding on what the bride should wear on her wedding day.
As it happens, the centuries-old ritual in the culturally-rich fishing town dates back to pre-Hispanic times and has remained engraved in the local culture to this day thanks to the efforts of indigenous groups working to preserve traditional values.
“We ask nature for enough rain, for enough food, that we have fish in the river,” Mayor Sosa explained.
