Parents of a teenage girl have been charged with manslaughter after their obese daughter passed away.
44-year-old Alun Titford and 39-year-old Sarah Lloyd-Jones are facing gross negligence manslaughter charges after their 16-year-old daughter, Kaylea, died from health issues stemming from obesity.
According to the reports, the girl was found dead in her bed at her family’s home in Newtown, Wales, back in October 2020.
Following her death, an investigation was launched into the circumstances surrounding the untimely passing of the young spina bifida sufferer who was immobile.
Kaylea’s parents have since been arrested and accused of contributing to their daughter’s death by allowing her to get morbidly obese while ignoring her needs for a healthy diet and exercise.
As per the arraignment, Titford and Lloyd-Jones did not “ensure she got enough exercise, was in a hygienic condition, had a safe and hygienic environment, her physical health was maintained, or that reasonable medical help was sought.”
The pair now face a trial and could be sentenced to jail time should they be found guilty of manslaughter by negligence.
“While the medical cause of death was proposed by Dr James may itself be natural, the circumstances precipitating Kaleigh’s death are under investigation by Dyfed-Powys Police,” Coroner Graeme Hughes said.
“As such those investigations give me reason to suspect that Kaleigh’s death may be unnatural, in that a natural cause of death may be considered unnatural where there is some culpable human involvement or contribution to that death.”
The trial is set to begin on January 16, 2023.
