The body of a 37-year-old mother who went missing during a custody handover for her 4-year-old daughter was found in a shallow grave near a barn in St Clair County, Alabama.
Cassie Carli was going to pick up her daughter from her ex when she vanished on March 27.
Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson said that the mother had been identified because of a tattoo on her arms, according to Fox 13.
The discovery of her remains came only hours after her ex, Marcus Spanevelo, was arrested in connection with the mother’s disappearance.
Reports say that Carli had traveled to a restaurant in Navarre, Florida, to pick up their daughter Saylor.
Speaking to journalists, Johnson said: “Cassie Carli who’s been missing now for about a week, we discovered her body while executing a search warrant out in Alabama.
“It was in a barn, in a shallow grave, so its not the ending that we wanted, obviously. But we’re hoping to provide a little closure for the family.”
Johnson also said that Carli’s ex had ‘absolutely not’ been cooperative after his arrest over her March 27 disappearance.
“He was totally uncooperative with us and that goes a long way,” the cop said.
“It’s your baby’s mother who’s missing and you’re not going to cooperate with authorities, it’s kind of telltale. We hated that Cassie has passed away, but it’s good to get closure for the family,” Johnson said. “It’s good to keep this dirtbag in jail, where he belongs.
“I think we have a great case and I think he’s either going to spend the rest of his life in jail or get the needle. Hopefully the needle.”
