A small plane has crashed into a supermarket in Mexico killing three people and injuring four.
A light aircraft crashed through a wall of a supermarket just south of Mexico City, killing three people and injuring four. It fell into Aurrerá winery shop in Pueblo Viejo, Colonia Azteca, in the city of Temixco at around 1:00 pm local time on Monday.
The governor of Cuauhtémoc Blanco reported that emergency services were providing care in Bodega Aurrerá in the Azteca neighborhood, in the city of Temixco. Temixco is the fourth-largest city in the Mexican state of Morelos.
Paramedics, the fire service, and police were all at the scene following the devastating incident at around 1:15 pm. Two of those injured were reportedly taken to nearby hospitals. Others went home after being treated at the site.
Officials said the three dead were aboard the King Air twin-engine plane, which has a capacity of about nine passengers. The civil defense office in the state of Morelos did not say whether the injured were passengers or people shopping in the store.
Apparently, a mechanical failure caused the pilot to crash into the store. Authorities mentioned that there could be a risk of explosion, but the Federal Civil Protection has assured the public there is no danger. The license plate of the plane was N426EM.
The craft apparently crashed through a cinderblock wall and hit the cleaning products section. Its tail and wings were nearly shorn off. The FlightAware website said the plane had taken off from the Pacific coast resort of Acapulco and was destined for the State of Puebla.
Photos distributed by the office showed the airplane’s fuselage lying amid scattered household goods inside the store in the town of Temixco, on the outskirts of the city of Cuernavaca.
Sharing a handful of pictures on Twitter, Mexican media site Diario de Morelos, wrote: “The first photos of the interior of Bodega Aurrerá circulate after the impact of an aircraft. The preliminary balance is 2 people dead, and at least 3 injured.”
Witnesses told Diario de Morelos they saw the plane having trouble staying in the air, saying the pilot “couldn’t control it” and smoke was coming out of one of the engines before it crashed.
The tragedy comes only a week after a plane carrying 132 passengers crashed into a mountain in China leaving no known survivors.
The Boeing 737 from Kunming to Guangzhou had an “accident” in the region of Guangxi and caused a fire in the mountains. The finding reportedly indicates that there could have been some kind of malfunction with the plane during its flight.
The deadliest accident in aviation history saw two planes collide and kill over 500 people. On March 27, 1977, two Boeing 747 Jumbo Jets collided on the runway at Los Rodeos Airport in Tenerife, Spain, killing 583 people.
