A 14-year-old boy tragically died after he fell from his grandparents’ apartment while watching the stars in the night sky.
Marcel Bruchal was in his grandparents’ apartment on the 7th floor of Sleaford House when the tragic incident happened on March 19.
The young boy, who wanted to be an astronomer, sustained fatal injuries and died despite the best efforts of his family members and paramedics.
Police said in a statement that his death was being treated as ‘unexplained’ but not suspicious.
Marcel’s grieving mother, Karolina Bruchal, has paid tribute to her “most caring, most intelligent” son.
“They were singing in the car on the way back (to the flat). He wanted to do some karaoke in the evening,” Ms. Bruchal said.
“They were chilling (in the living room). They wanted to have some ice cream. They were preparing this, he stayed in the living room for two minutes.”
Ms. Bruchal continued: “His little brother came back to ask what flavor ice cream he wanted and the balcony door was open and he wasn’t there.
“He looked down and he saw him (on the ground below). That’s when he started shouting.”
Marcel’s grandparents rushed outside to help him and emergency services were called.
“They brought a little pillow and blanket so he was not cold and at some point the ambulance came,” Ms. Bruchal shared.
“Around 10pm (they called me), after they were sure he had passed away. Before then they were hoping they wouldn’t have to tell us.”
“He was the most caring, the most intelligent and smart and funny (boy),” she said. “He loved his little brother so much, he was very smart. He wanted to be an astronomer. He was choosing his GCSEs and he wanted to study astronomy.
“We think this is why it happened because it was a very clear night and he possibly went out to look at the stars. We believe it was a tragic accident, he leaned too far.
“He was liked by everyone, he had lots of friends. We are still in disbelief, we are still hoping we are going to wake up.
“We will all need support and counselling, but we are trying to cope. I cannot say that we are sad, we are not sad or devastated – that doesn’t express how we feel. There are no words to express how we feel.”
