An officer could face criminal charges after restraining a 12-year-old schoolgirl by kneeling on her neck for more than one minute.
The incident took place in Kenosha, Wisconsin, where 37-year-old officer Shawn Guetschow intervened to break up a fight between students at the Lincoln Middle School cafeteria on March 4.
In shocking footage, the officer, who worked as a security guard at the middle school at the time of the incident, is seen throwing the young girl to the floor while she was fighting with another student.
He then proceeds to push her head towards the floor before using his knee to restrain her neck. According to the reports, the cop knelt on the 12-year-old’s neck for some 90 seconds before escorting her out of the cafeteria in handcuffs.
Following the incident, the student’s father, Jerrel Perez, called for criminal charges against Guetschow for using a technique that was banned in the state in 2021.
While the Kenosha Unified School District initially put Guetschow on paid leave, the officer who worked part-time at the school later resigned from his position as a security guard and suggested he was the victim in this case.
“Given the events that have taken place and the escalated attention this incident at Lincoln Middle School has caused in the community, mental and emotional strain it has [brought] upon my family, and the lack of communication and or support I have received from the district, I can no longer continue my employment with the Kenosha Unified School District,” he wrote in his resignation letter.
As of this writing, Guetschow remains employed by the Kenosha PD.
“We continue our investigation, paying careful attention to the entire scope of the incident. We have no further update at this time,” the police since said.
