A 4-year-old boy tragically died after shooting himself in the head while playing with his dad’s gun at the back of a car.
Jarion Walker, 4, was in his family’s car together with his two younger siblings, his mother, and another adult when he found his father’s gun and accidentally shot himself with it.
The tragic incident took place in Westwego, New Orleans, on Saturday just before 11 pm.
According to the preliminary reports, Jarion found and fired his father’s gun while playing in the backseat of the car. At the time of the incident, his mother and the other adult, who were sitting in the front, were allegedly smoking marijuana.
After the shooting, the boy was rushed to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy report has since confirmed that Jarion’s gunshot wound was self-inflicted.
As of this writing, the case remains under investigation, whereas it yet remains unclear whether the boy’s parents will face any charges.
“I don’t think it was appropriate to make an arrest at this point. They just lost a child, and it certainly wasn’t intentional, by any means,” Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joseph Lopinto said as he confirmed that the results of their investigation will be handed over to the Jefferson Parish District Attorney’s Office.
Lopinto also revealed that the gun used in the incident belonged to the boy’s father and that Jarion found it under the car seat.
Following the tragedy, Lopinto warned the parents never to leave guns in their vehicles or where their children could reach them.
“These types of deaths can certainly be prevented,” he added.
