The rescue teams confirmed six casualties and are working to find one more after a car park and cars fall onto a row of houses.
The terrifying incident occurred at around 2 am on Monday, January 24 in Ankadifotsy Ambodivona, Madagascar. The huge landslide has caused a car park to collapse and several cars to fall down onto a row of houses leaving six individuals dead and another one still missing.
Madagascar, officially the Republic of Madagascar, and previously known as the Malagasy Republic, is an island country in the Indian Ocean, approximately 400 kilometers (250 miles) off the coast of East Africa across the Mozambique Channel.
At 592,800 square kilometers (228,900 sq mi), Madagascar is the world’s 47th largest country, the 2nd largest island country, and the fourth-largest island. The nation consists of the island of Madagascar and numerous smaller outer islands.
Heavy rains and flooding have troubled Madagascar for a while now and were responsible for the car park falling down yesterday. It has been reported that the structure showed no signs of any damage before the horrifying collapse.
A lot of the houses were totally destroyed under the debris and took rescue teams almost all day to get six people out of the rubble.
Harrowing images from this most recent incident show piles of rubble where houses once stood, with rescue teams in high visibility slowly but surely making progress. The cars can be seen balanced dangerously on the pile of mud.
According to Captain Ralimbison, a spokesperson for the local fire brigade, they are still working to find another person, suspected to be still trapped inside of one of the houses.
The landslide completely folded the car park’s rubble brickwork, bringing down eight cars in total including an Audi Q7 and a Toyota Fortuner.
Colonel Tiana Razafimanahaka, head of the fire brigade, said: “The first call was recorded at our headquarters at 2 am. About 20 minutes later our men began to work on the spot.”
He explained that in one of the homes, three people were found alive and two children were found dead. In the next house, one was found alive with another five missing. The bodies of four of those five have now been found, with rescue teams still searching for the fifth.
Colonel Razafimanahaka explained: “The rainy season is in full swing. I urge everyone to be careful. Dwellings at risk should be evacuated. In case of need for assistance, the firefighters, as well as the civil protection corps (CPC) of the army, remain reachable.”
This disastrous news came after a number of deadly collapses and landslides across Madagascar in recent days because of the rainy season.
Madagascar’s varied fauna and flora are endangered by human activity. Since the arrival of humans around 2,350 years ago, Madagascar has lost more than 90 percent of its original forest.
Mid-2021 also marked the beginning of the 2021 Madagascar food crisis which, due to a severe drought, caused hundreds of thousands of people to face food insecurity and over one million people were on the verge of famine.
Despite its many assets, Madagascar is today one of the poorest countries in the world. It is also an island country with a wealth of unique biodiversity. Since 1952, AFD has been supporting a number of actors in the country: NGOs, local authorities, companies, and authorities, to support inclusive and sustainable development.
