A woman has been arrested and charged with abuse of a corpse after 27-year-old remains of a newborn baby were found in a freezer.
62-year-old Melissa Sims McCann of Tullahoma, Tennessee, was apprehended by the authorities after human remains were found in the freezer she had been renting for 27 years.
According to the reports, the remains were discovered after the freezer storage unit McCann had been renting was auctioned off. While it wasn’t immediately clear whether the bones belonged to a human, a medical examiner confirmed that they must have belonged to a newborn baby.
Following the disturbing find, McCann was arrested and charged with abuse of a corpse. As the investigators believe, the woman stored her baby’s remains in the freezer shortly after the child was born nearly three decades ago.
Prosecutors further allege that McCann, who was at the time in her 30s, rented the storage unit shortly after giving birth at home.
“Upon inspection of the remains, it was not readily apparent if they were human. Upon sending the remains to the medical examiner’s office, they determined that the remains were that of a human newborn,” Coffee County District Attorney Craig Northcott confirmed in a statement.
The investigation currently remains ongoing, and there is a strong possibility that McCann will face additional charges.
As of this writing, it is not clear what the woman’s motive for storing the remains was. It is also not clear how the baby died or why the newborn’s mother decided to conceal its birth.
