A young teacher was shot in the back by a teenage student who opened fire following a brawl in his classroom.
On Wednesday morning, 18-year-old Timothy George Simpkins opened fire at Timberview High School in Arlington, Texas, after a fight erupted at the school.
After he started shooting with his .45 caliber gun, the teenager shot 25-year-old English teacher Calvin Pettitt in the back and wounded a total of at least three people.
Though the young teacher suffered a collapsed lung and broken ribs during the shooting, he survived the ordeal thanks to the bullet just narrowly missing his aorta.
“Feeling extremely blessed and thankful. Please hold you loved ones close, this is a crazy world we’re living in,” Grace Rinearson, the teacher’s sister, expressed as she called the incident “one of the scariest mornings of my life.”
Following the shooting at the high school, Simpkins made a getaway, prompting the authorities to launch a manhunt on the “armed and dangerous” suspect.
Hours later, the student turned himself in as he visited the police station together with his lawyer.
After the school shooting and the young man’s arrest, Simpkins was charged with three counts of aggravated assault. He is, as of this writing, being held at the Ott Cribbs police station with his bail set at $75,000.
Following the incident, SWAT teams reportedly raided the student’s family home and searched the premises. As the 18-year-old’s mother claimed, her son was a victim of bullying at his high school.
As it has since been confirmed, three people were injured during the shooting. A 15-year-old male student remains in critical condition after undergoing emergency surgery. Meanwhile, 25-year-old teacher Calvin Pettitt is said to be in good condition despite being shot in the back.
Another person, a teenage girl, reportedly wasn’t shot but suffered an abrasion. She is expected to make a full recovery.
