39-year-old actress Jodie Whittaker is calling it quits after three seasons of Doctor Who.
The actress who has reportedly been a lead star of the famous sci-fi show as the first-ever female doctor has now confirmed that she is all geared up to step down in 2022.
Now, show executives from BBC believe it’s time to search for a replacement, and for that, they’re in search of casting an actor of color because they believe the show is in need of some diversity.
Moreover, a close source to ‘The Sun’ revealed that the series’ team has also viewed the hit sci-fi series as one that’s very progressive, and hence for this very reason, hiring an actor of color to play Jodie’s role would truly cement that very fact.
If and when that happens, many believe that it would truly be a step in the right direction, making it the first for a show of this popularity.
With that being said, it’s no surprise that the show has been the center of decreased or lower ratings with many members from the audience making complaints relating to the drama being overly politicized.
In the same way, they feel the episodes continually include events from history such as the famous US Civil war as well as the 1947 Indian partition.
Another reason why this decision is going to be highly momentous has a lot to do with how the season will celebrate its 60th anniversary in the year 2023 so to have diversity on board by that time would truly be an honor for many.
“Producers are now moving more towards caring less about age and gender and more towards color and ethnicity,” explained experts. And that for many is a surprise that is being welcomed across the board.
