A trans school swimmer who suffered from emotional trauma after being banned from boys’ changing rooms is now victorious.

Nick Himley first transitioned into a male during his 2015 to 2016 school year, which shocked plenty of people on campus. Known for his immense talent in swimming, he was renowned for representing his school, Coon Rapids High School, during swimming.

However, being trans wasn’t an easy road to success and Nick soon felt the pressure that he constantly faced from officials. When it came to changing rooms, he was blatantly denied from entering the premises. Instead, officials on the school board forced him to make use of a completely segregated and deserted locker room that no one else ever did, by the end of February, claimed his lawyer.

The emotional turmoil took such a grave effect on his overall mental wellbeing that he was forced to check into a hospital to deal with all the emotional trauma going on around him. And that’s when his worried parents opted to file a lawsuit against the school’s board.

Court documents revealed how the board’s decision to go ahead and bar the young 16-year-old was absolutely baseless. Therefore, they granted Nick victory in the case, forcing the school to pay out a staggering amount of $300k in damage. Nick and his mum couldn’t believe the case’s outcome and thanked the advisory board who took up the matter.

Now, the school has enhanced its policy regarding locker rooms, with the decision being reversed by the CRHS school’s principal, Curtis Wallrath, as per immediate effect.

In February 2016, Nick’s condition had come to such a severe point that he was forcibly admitted to the hospital for nearly 2 weeks due to severe mental health concerns. Doctors also feared that he would need to be readmitted the following month too. Before filing the lawsuit, his parents made the decision to remove him from that toxic environment and change school districts. And that’s when they filed the complaint.

Today, Nick looks back on his journey, claiming it was a very difficult experience for him. He is doing well today and is glad that the board realized that what they did to him was wrong. Moreover, he hopes the case will highlight such issues in the future and prevent such incidents from taking place with future generations.
