The ‘Vanessa Williams penthouse’ controversy took place after 1983.
When Vanessa Williams bagged the crown of being the first Black woman to be Miss America. This was a big moment in the entire history of the United States. And perhaps throughout the globe.
Vanessa Williams became an A-lister artist in areas of singing and acting. Whenever there were big award shows like Emmy or Grammy or Tony, her name would top the list. But soon enough, she made another history. And it was resigning from Miss America only after 10-months.
A controversy sparked due to ‘Vanessa Williams penthouse magazine’. Let’s find out what really happened back then. And what made her take such a huge decision.
Vanessa Williams penthouse
So what really happened was a magazine published Miss Williams’ naked photos without her consent. This spared a hot debate in the country. Everyone was talking about her morality and chastity. Everyone bashed her for her naked photos on social media. A media trial began and it defamed her image.
The Miss American organization’s authority did pressurize her to forgo her crown. So Vanessa did renounce her Miss America title. And this is how the beginning of her career’s end did take place.
The hypocrisy of the Miss America organization
The news aired ‘Vanessa Williams penthouse’ relinquishing from the title. It sparked an argument within the nation. Everyone was shocked at how an organization that thrives on sexually objectifying women. It is now firing someone doing the same following in their footsteps.
This exposed the hidden dual faced nature of the organization. Also, the real reason behind the pressure was not her leaked pictures. It seems like the bigger problem was the color of her skin. That a lot of people had problems with.
No one did care about giving an explanation let along apologizing. The organization blamed Vanessa for saving her naked pictures. And taking them in the first place. No one debated how the immoral and illegal act of the magazine hurt her. How it was basically their fault for publishing unauthorized pictures of the artist.
The authorities only criticized the magazine. But for having a poor taste in publishing. And that’s all, it all ended just like that.

The sickening culture of victim-blaming
One of the saddest parts of this all trashy television and societal culture is the victim-blaming.
You may observe yourself that whenever such a tragedy happens. The public and governments start bashing the victim. Instead of focusing on what heinous crime the culprit did.Everyone moves the face of their criticism towards the victim.
This culture is not new. It did not manifest only in the Vanessa Williams penthouse case. This is more like a lifestyle of the US public. If there’s a rape. Everyone damns the girl who is raped. Because of the revealing clothes. She was wearing it.
The ground reality is one should avoid things that reinforce sexual whims. But this does not mean, men can go around raping whoever they see is ‘trying to provoke them’.
Finally, the organization did make an apology after more than 3 decade
Back in 2015, the new administration of the Miss America organization did something incredible. The CEO did the opening of the show. But with an apology to miss Vanessa Williams penthouse. He said that you did live your life in grace and dignity.
Though none of us currently in the organization back then. But on behalf of today’s organization. I want to apologize to you and to your mother, Miss Helen Williams.
I want to apologize for anything that made you feel any less. Then the Miss America you are. And Miss America you always will be.
