An airport worker was killed in a horror accident after getting sucked into a plane engine.
On Friday night, at around 10.25 pm, emergency crews responded to the San Antonio International Airport after a member of the airport ground crew got ingested by the Delta Airlines’ plane engine.
According to the reports, the worker was pulled into the engine while the plane was taxiing on the tarmac after landing at the airport following a flight from Los Angeles.
The shocking incident was confirmed by the National Transportation Safety Board.
“Delta Flight 1111 was taxying to the gate, with one engine on at that time, and a worker was ingested into that engine at 10.25 pm,” the statement read.
“The NTSB has been in contact with Delta. They are in the information gathering process at this point.”
Following the tragedy, Delta also confirmed the incident while vowing to investigate the death of the unnamed contractor.
“We are heartbroken and grieving the loss of an aviation family member’s life in San Antonio. Our hearts and full support are with their family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time,” the company said.
Meanwhile, officials at the airport said the incident left everyone “deeply saddened” while reassuring the public that the airport is working with authorities to get to the bottom of the case.
“An accident occurred on the ground at San Antonio International Airport tonight that resulted in the fatality of an airline ground crew member,” the airport officials confirmed.
“We are deeply saddened by this incident and are working with authorities as they begin their investigation. We will share more information as details become available.”
Paying a tribute to the employee and expressing their condolences to the family was also Unifi Aviation, the worker’s employer.
“Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased, and we remain focused on supporting our employees on the ground and ensuring they are being taken care of during this time,” they said.
“From our initial investigation, this incident was unrelated to Unifi’s operational processes, safety procedures and policies. Out of respect for the deceased, we will not be sharing any additional information.”
