A young girl was killed by electrocution while talking to her friend over the phone during bath time.
16-year-old Maria Antonietta Cutillo from Avellino, Italy, was enjoying a warm bath while talking to one of her friends on the phone as the device was charging.
According to the local reports, the girl at one point accidentally dropped her cell phone in the bathtub, causing the electrical current to pass through her body and fatally electrocute her.
After the call was cut short, the friend Maria was talking to called the emergency services who rushed to the teen’s home and found her dead in her bathtub.
The girl’s parents were reportedly not at home at the time of the incident.
Maria’s premature death currently remains under investigation and an autopsy will be performed to confirm the suspected cause of death.
Experts have previously warned people not to use electronic devices while taking a bath especially when the devices are charging.
Back in 2019, a 13-year-old girl from Amsterdam suffered severe injuries after getting electrocuted when her charging phone fell into the tub while she was taking a bath.
Fortunately, the paramedics that arrived at the family’s home were able to resuscitate the teen and rush her to the hospital where she fought for her life for two days.
While the girl survived the ordeal, she was left with partial amnesia and couldn’t remember a thing from the time of the incident.
“If household electrical devices are used in bathrooms, users must be aware of safety hazards,” Dr Sem Hardon said as he explained that the child was shocked by 240 volts.
“Nonetheless, electrical appliances or cords should never be plugged in near water and should never be in contact with a wet environment.”
